Warrior Poets of Faith: (1 Samuel 17 / Isaiah 6)
Many are familiar with the story of David and Goliath. David, the young boy who defeated the Philistine champion Goliath. Goliath was a warrior for the Philistine army and David was the Warrior Poet of God.
As I read the story I can picture in my minds eye, the army of Israel on one mountain top and the army of the Philistines on the other, with valley in between them. I can see Goliath as he comes out to defy the army Israel. As he challenges the warriors of Israel to come out and fight him. I can see the warriors of Israel as the cower down and are terrified.
For forty days Goliath would come and challenge and defy the army of Israel. He would shout “give me a man and let us fight each other”. Day in and day out, for forty days, Goliath, this giant, this warrior, this champion of Gath would come out and yell “give me a man!”
But none of the warriors from Israel accepted the challenge, they were terrified, they were afraid of this giant. These warriors who had seen the mighty hand of God move and give them victory, these warriors who knew about all the things that God had done for them, coward down and would not go and face the giant.
In our society today, we face many giants. Giants that frighten us, giants that challenge us, giants that appear to be invisible. The giants mock us, they defy the army of God and they, like Goliath, challenge us, “send me a man!” Yet we who serve the one true God cower down, we run from the challenge and the chance to defeat the giant. The giant in our lives, the giants in our communities and the giants in our churches mock us, “send me a man!”
As these giants yell out their challenge, God is also calling out His people. “who will go out for us?” (Isaiah 6:8) God is calling out for a man, for a woman, for a Warrior Poet to go and face the giants of our day. In 1 Samuel 17 the Warrior Poet David answered the call. David slew the giant of his day and now in 2018 God is calling out for new Warrior Poets to slay the giants of our day.
So as the giant yells out in mockery, “send me a man”, God is calling out for His Warrior Poets, “who will go out for us?”
Will you answer the call? Will I answer the call? Or will we be like the warriors of Israel and cower down?
